Anna K karaoke bar in Helsinki

One of my top three favourite karaoke bars... See why you should try this place too.
Anna K. is a small dark karaoke bar located almost next to the shopping centre Kamppi, in the very centre of Helsinki. From the outside not very welcoming sight, inside lies a treasure.
So, why is this place worth visiting:
  • Great list of songs - this is very important when it comes to a karaoke bar... and Anna K. has a very good list of songs - of course in Finnish, Swedish and English...but also some in French or Spanish...check it out for yourself on biisilista.fi
Even though you can see the list online, you still apply for songs old fashioned way in here - writing your request on a paper and giving it to the box on the bar.
  • Friendly staff - I have not met an unfriendly bartender here. It opens at 17.00 at the workdays (friday to sunday at 15.00) and until 20.00 there is only one person working behind a bar, operating also the karaoke machine. It means that sometimes you have to wait couple minutes, before they take care of the customers at the bar, but they never let you wait longer then necessary. I like that.
  • Interesting group of co-singers - you can meet there a refreshing mixture of locals and random tourists just walking by. People usually come here to sing and listen, not solely for drinking... but of course, you will meet drunk people here...Duh! It is a bar! :)
  • Good location - as I said, it is located in the street next to the shopping centre Kamppi, close to the main train station and main bus stations, so easily accessible, and easy to get home from there.
still kindda empty, on saturday around 17.00
What I do not like:
  • Risk of fainting - If the bar is full, the air inside gets very heavy and unbreathable. I had some unpleasant moments recently, where I had to walk out for a bit, to get some fresh air. So be aware of that.
  • When crowded, REALLY crowded - the place is quite small and when you sing, you actually stand right next to the bar or at the ends of it. It feels good, but also kind of inconvenient, if the place is crowded. Because people are simply walking over each other, bumping into each other... it can be interfering and unpleasant to someone with a wider intimate zone. Plus, if someone wants to start a drunk fight, or starts to be drunk annoying, it kind of influences everyone in the bar.
If you want to find this place and try it for yourself (or just go and have a beer there) you will find it at Annankatu 23, Helsinki.
