Public transport in Helsinki underwent some changes in the past two years, and it looks like more is coming.
Starting from 27.4.2019 there will be introduced a new coding system for the individual travel zones, so if you wanna know how to buy a ticket, stay tuned.
What are the different zones:
explanation of the new zones |
- The whole HSL region is soon to be divided into 4 zones (instead of three) identified by letters A, B, C and D.
- Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen and Vantaa are located in the zones A, B and C.
- Kerava, Sipoo, Tuusula, Kirkkonummi and Siuntio are located in the zone D.
- Price of the ticket is based on the distance traveled (i.e. distance from the center of Helsinki).
- You buy a ticket for the zones you travel through.
- Forms of the ticket stay the same - you can check out my earlier article on How to Buy a Ticket.
- There are no one-zone tickets (only for a zone D, that is larger). Depending on the areas you travel around, you buy either AB, BC or ABC in the area of Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen and Vantaa.
- The new travel card reader will automatically offer you tickets available and display zone you are in.
- At the stops, the zone is shown on the stop signs as well as on the posters on bus stop.
- The Journey Planner (reittiopas.fi) tells you which ticket you need for your journey.
- If you already have a season ticket (for specific zones only), you can expand your travel area at a low cost by buying a single extension ticket (via travel card or the HSL mobile app).
