Sauna

Essential part of Finnish life.

Neodmyslitelná součást finského života.
(Česky níže)

In my opinion, sauna is one of the most typical element of the Finnish culture and also the most common (even daily) event. In the Czech Republic there is a bath in every second bathroom, in Finland there is sauna in every house or flat. Robo thinks that sauna is used here instead of a bath ... In both we sweat, right?. :-)

People build their sauna either in their houses (electric saunas are usually inside) or next to the house (in the form of a small wooden house ... they are the best - usually heated by wood).

In the block of the flats there is usually one part of a basement redesigned and modified into sauna (with toilets, showers and lockers) which is shared by all inhabitants of the house. A schedule for this sauna is similar to a schedule for cleaning of common areas. There is always reserved a particular time in particular day for every family (flat). For example, when we lived in Kerava, we could use it every Friday 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.. At that time, sauna was preheated automatically (if we paid it along with the rent) and we could come and sweat :-) If the time is not prepaid, sauna simply do not turn on and cannot be used.

Finns (specially when it comes to the holiday or special occasions) like to use sauna couple of times in a row. It is constantly reheated (even for hours) and people are going in and out as they wish. Within the breaks they drink beer or cider outside, swim in the water, cool down in the wind or roll in the snow (depending where the sauna is located and in which time of the year it is held).

Sometimes it is a festive event, sometimes it is just a daily cleansing ritual.Inside the sauna you can do almost everything. Only two activities are strictly prohibited - whistling and telling jokes. Everything else is allowed. ;-)My first mixed sauna (men and women together; the domain of the young generation, as I learned from older people...) was kind of shocking for me. I was ashamed - naked with other men and whipping ourselves with vichta - a birch twig! It was a strong cup of coffee.

Nevertheless this experience helped me realize that in Finland nudity in the sauna is very different than nudity in public. During the ritual of the sauna you can just go out naked, walking in front of your house and no one will wonder or feel offended (Well, not exactly, you always have to stay on your own property). Sitting naked in the sauna is like sitting in the bar or cafeteria with you friends, talking or just sitting silent, the only difference is that you are naked, sweating together ... Even though it's pretty relaxing, one part of me will probably always feel a little ashamed. After all, I'm not a Finn. :-)

I have been in sauna maybe 20 times so far (electric or wooden one, in the house or in the block of flats, in the city or in the countryside; I even visited a mobile sauna built on the old military truck ...). Each type of sauna has its own charm. I certify that it is very easy to get used to this habit and when that happens, you can not imagine living without it.

I made a little research and I asked my roommates and friends (Finns), if they remembered their first sauna in life and how old were they in that moment.
Everyone marveled at my question and then he/she answered something like: "I don't know, I was maybe one year old ...?" :-) It means that people here takes sauna from an early age. I have seen a baby being in the sauna (not very warm one, but still...) Even pregnant women do not deny themselves a pleasure of it. One flatmate told me that in the past kids were born in the there, because it was the cleanest place in the house.

See? Sauna is an universal place for both pleasure and important stuff. :-)

The only place that I haven't visited yet is a public spa. Lots of people recommend it to me and so I am passing the references to you.

To rozhodně ne.

Ha!

There is one thing which is a lot more bad and cursed than whistling and joking. It is smoking. Nothing smells as bad as tobacco smoke in heated sauna. It hit your eyes, throat and lungs like pouring nitrogen acid on stove stones.

So no smoking inside sauna building, but sometimes it might be tolerated on terrace if sauna's ventilation doesn't come from that direction.

You are so right, JuKo! Thank you for your comment. I am not a smoker, nor are my friends, so I could not really imagine people doing that. So yes, the biggest sin against sauna ritual is smoking! Sending warm wishes. Hope you have enjoyed plenty of good sauna so far! ;-) Vendula
